The Fallout 4 frame rate on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One regularly falls below 30fps. This is shown by an analysis of gameplay images. Especially with fierce battles with many opponents, great frame drops occur.
Fallout 4 exhibits performance issues on consoles – update
While playing Fallout 4 on the PlayStation 4 it is clear that the frame rate does not reach a constant 30fps. I have recorded and analyzed gameplay images with the software tool that has recently been used for reviews of console games. In situations in which a lot of action takes place, the frame rate drops regularly to values around 25fps, with lows around 20fps. Even looking through the sights of a rifle often results in falls in the framerate.
Pete Hines, marketing manager at Bethesda, said earlier in response to a question on Twitter that the game runs smoothly on the consoles with a solid 30fps. That promise cannot be realized by the developer for the time being. The performance problems manifest themselves in version 1.01 of Fallout 4, which is the version with the day one- patch. This patch was already available for reviewers at the end of October.
I have not yet been able to test the Xbox One version of Fallout 4, but an analysis by Digital Foundry shows that the Xbox version suffers from the same problems. In addition, the game on the console of Microsoft also suffers from stuttering, where the image stands still for a full second. The PlayStation 4 does not suffer from this problem.
Bethesda has not yet responded to the performance problems. Perhaps the developer can improve the framerate by means of software updates. The game is for sale on November 10 for Windows, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Tweakers publish the full review of Fallout 4 on Tuesday.
Update 16:33: Fallout 4 also shows performance problems on the Xbox One, according to the analysis by Digital Foundry. The article has been adjusted on the basis of this information.
PlayStation 4 version of Fallout 4 performs significantly better after update
Bethesda has released update 1.02 for the PlayStation 4 version of Fallout 4. An analysis shows that the patch delivers significantly better performance. Although the framerate sometimes still drops to 20fps, it remains more stable at 30fps.
The Fallout 4 console version suffered significant performance issues at the launch. With both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One versions, the frame rate dropped regularly to values of 20fps or even lower. With the update to version 1.02, which is 512MB in size, there is certainly a lot of improvement on the Sony console, according to an analysis by Digital Foundry. Whether the patch will produce similar gains on the Xbox One is not clear yet, as the update has not yet appeared for the Microsoft console.
Digital Foundry focuses on the Corvega factory in the game. For the patch, the framerate dropped in some situations to 16fps and during shootings at the factory, the PlayStation 4 almost never managed to put down a stable 30fps. After the update, there are still drops to 20fps visible, but the performance is significantly better than before the patch. The performance has also improved visibly compared to the version number 1.01 patch. Gamers who play the game on the Xbox One can expect the update in the coming days.
